Cybersecurity Training Opportunities
You don't have to spend a fortune to receive quality Cybersecurity Training.
There are several pathways to a career in cybersecurity. Some of the skillsets for cybersecurity overlap, such as pen testing and network analysis, and some require different skillsets, such as risk management or contingency planning. The best way to get into a career in cybersecurity is to acquire basic security skills to build a solid foundation with the knowledge base to go into several aspects of cybersecurity. Certifications such as Information Technology Fundamentals, Network+, and Security+ are great ways to build that foundation needed for a successful career in cybersecurity.
The CompTIA Security+ is the one foundational certification that I would recommend every person acquires, regardless of what field of cybersecurity you enter. Note that there are security topics embedded in most entry-level IT training courses. The further you go into training topics, the more you will see how these separate training pathways cross paths. Once the foundation training is firmly established, moving through the other certifications will become easier.
Another critical reason to establish a firm foundation in cybersecurity training is to keep your skills current. Once you receive your Security+ and Network+ certs and enter the industry, many government and private organizations often allow you to further your cybersecurity education by offering free or low-cost options to promote your cybersecurity skills and perform your job more efficiently.
Cybersecurity training is not a one-and-done situation; cybersecurity is a never-ending pursuit of new and emerging skills you must train for during your entire career. New skillsets are always needed to keep up with changing technology and trends in work scenarios. The job you walk into today will be much different in a couple of years.
Some of the top jobs in cybersecurity are Cybersecurity Analyst, Security Engineer, Security Architect, Penetration Tester, Security Executive, and many other skill sets that are not as well known, such as Incident handlers, Cybersecurity Researchers, and Compliance & Governance.
The above jobs are very different, but every one of those job positions requires the same foundational courses to get started. The National Cybersecurity Center (NCC) Adult Education initiative is one of the best ways to acquire the knowledge to enter the cybersecurity industry. Many companies out there charge exorbitant fees for their training, and they fall far short of the promises they profess. After training is over, there is more concern about paying for their training than entering the job market.
The National Cybersecurity Center (NCC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit for cyber innovation and awareness. Established in 2016 from the vision of Governor John Hickenlooper, in coordination with several people from the University of Colorado Springs (UCCS) and the community, the NCC serves both public and private organizations and individuals through training and education, and research.
The National Cybersecurity Center's Cyber Education Program provides cybersecurity leadership and free or low-cost resources and education for underrepresented groups in the cybersecurity industry, such as women and people of color. As our nation addresses the critical gap in skilled cybersecurity talent, the NCC addresses the importance of cyber education through programs and partnerships that invite students to participate in an ecosystem that encourages all people to learn, explore, and build their skills to gain sustainable employment for jobs of the future.
What do we offer?
The National Cybersecurity Center offers instructor-led virtual learning and in-person training. The online training is open to people in all states. Presently, the in-person classes are only for Colorado Springs citizens, but we are working to establish in-person classes outside of Colorado. The courses we currently offer are IT Fundamentals Pro and Security Pro. The security Pro course leads to CompTIA certification. The length of this course is 12 weeks, and the next class starts March 28, for both in-person and virtual.
In addition to the training, we also offer year-long access to our Cyber Range, giving you the ability to further your cybersecurity skills. The Cyber Range has a library of interactive cybersecurity skills content delivered in an emulated cloud-based environment. Courses are pre-mapped, but individuals can choose what they want to learn al a carte in an unstructured environment. This training can lead to digital certificates that will enable you to either get a job or upscale the job you already have.
